Basic Sustainability Design

Pathways and front/back yard planning with garden leveling and allocation of greenery, activities, and water areas

Sustainable Villa

The design is based on some sustainable techniques to create a comfort area that adapt with the climate change, starting by the orientation of the building which is tilted 45 degrees according to the north, the building are responsive to the solar orientation to reduce the energy consumption.

According to reduce the amount of solar radiation, all facades are blocked and movable louvers used to protect the pent-house to minimize the amount of radiation, all materials used has high u-Value.

Ventilation is maintained through creating stack effect and fresh breeze by adding water feature in the courtyard.

El-Sheikh Zayed Sustainable Modern Villa

METHODS converted this Zayed villa from an ordinary to an environmentally-friendly and relatively energy-saving building. We created a double height space to act as an air tank for exchanging hot and cool air through a ceiling sky light, which also acted as a light collector for the indoor space. This, along with the wind catcher that takes the winds from the Northern façade to the spaces on the southern side; created a full cycle of air moving through the villa! A movable shading device was designed for the southern façade to track solar angles, and photovoltaic solar cells were planned for the roof to act as a source for renewable energy. Thick walls with insulation-filled inner gaps were chosen and reflective surfaces were designed for the finishing to enable natural light distribution. Indeed, the sustainable solutions made through this villa made it an environmental case study!

El-Sheikh Zayed Sustainable Islamic Villa

Through METHODS' success in a previous sustainable design; word of mouth brought up this second sustainable project. The challenge was to make a design that is contemporary, Islamic, and sustainable despite the limits of being handed the design as a concrete skeleton that's already constructed. We introduced the Islamic style through motifs, a pointed arch, the use of wooden materials in the facades, and the mashrabeyas which act as shading devices reducing heat transfer. A skylight was created above an inner court here too; which acted as an air tank with windows in every level of the villa: the basement, the ground, and the first floors.
